What is Six Sigma?

The term sigma is taken from a letter in the Greek alphabet  and is used in statistics as a measure of variation. The fundamental objective of Six Sigma is customer satisfaction through continuous improvement in quality.Six Sigma improvement was an expression created by Motorola in the early eighties as a synonym for their quality program. If you have a process according to the normal distribution theorem of Gauss, then the mean average value and standard deviation (sigma) are well defined parameters. Under certain conditions nearly 100% (exactly: 99.99966%) of all opportunities are covered in the range of 6 x Sigma. Or in other words: out of an amount of 1 Million opportunities only 3.4 defects can be found. This is a theoretical limit for practically attainable quality.
